(Beyond the Matn: The Authority of the Margin in Evaluating Manuscripts and Critiquing Textual Editions)

This study introduces a new methodological framework for the evaluation of manuscripts and the critique of scholarly editions, centered on the manuscript's margin as a primary criterion. Traditionally viewed as a secondary space for corrections, glosses, or collation notes, the margin is re-conceptualized here as a "parallel text" or a "metatext" that functions as a critical witness to the manuscript's lifecycle and the editor's methodology. The research argues that the density, nature, and transparency of marginal interventions—from scribal corrections (lahq, ḍarb), collation records (balāghāt), and ownership notes to the modern editor's critical apparatus—provide a more objective measure of a manuscript's value than conventional criteria such as age or provenance. By analyzing the margin, one can assess the scribe's diligence, the transmission history of the text, and, most importantly, the scholarly integrity and methodological rigor of the editor. The study critiques the common practice of concealing a base manuscript's flaws and proposes that a systematic analysis of the editor's marginal decisions can expose methodological shortcomings, thereby establishing the margin as an indispensable tool for peer review and the advancement of textual criticism.
