The Second English Civil War and the Fall of the Monarchy in 1649
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research addresses the Second English Civil War (1648–1649), which is considered one of the most significant chapters in the history of modern England. It led to the execution of King Charles I, the end of absolute monarchy, and the establishment of the republic under Oliver Cromwell. This war was a direct result of the political, religious, and economic conflicts that had accumulated over the previous two decades. It played a decisive role in establishing the concept of constitutional monarchy in Britain.
The study aims to shed further light on the importance of this war, which is seen as a critical turning point in the history of seventeenth-century England, and in British history in general, due to the political transformations and the shift in the system of governance from monarchy to a republican regime, culminating in the execution of King Charles I.
The research adopts a mixed quantitative and qualitative analytical approach throughout most of its topics, in order to convey information from primary sources to researchers. Notably, previous studies on this subject did not address it in sufficient detail to uncover the most important historical facts based on reliable sources, focusing on the House of Stuart, from its early stages to the last English monarchs, and how this war affected the family, which ruled for an entire generation.
The research concludes with the execution of King Charles I, the temporary abolition of the monarchy in England, and the establishment of a republican government led by Oliver Cromwell in 1649.
