This study seeks to deconstruct the epistemological foundations that have contributed to shaping the position of social work within the broader framework of the social sciences, and to uncover the sources of the problematic nature of its theoretical identity, oscillating between its consideration as an autonomous academic field of knowledge and its characterization as a professional, intervention-oriented practice. The study adopts a critical analytical approach, based on a comparative examination of contemporary modes of knowledge production and the trajectories through which scientific fields are constituted. The findings indicate that the crisis of the cognitive identity of social work fundamentally stems from the absence of epistemological decisiveness in defining its scientific reference framework and the boundaries that distinguish it from sociology. The results further demonstrate that adopting open and flexible research approaches grounded in interdisciplinary intersections and the bridging of theoretical paradigms can enable the gradual construction of cognitive autonomy for this field, without severing ties with its foundational theoretical underpinnings. The study ultimately calls for the formulation of an independent epistemological framework for social work—one that consciously balances theoretical rigor with the demands of professional practice—thereby strengthening its standing as an intervention-oriented field of knowledge capable of keeping pace with societal transformations and reinforcing the practical dimension of the social sciences.
