The Role of Interactive Maps in Enhancing Geography Lessons in Secondary Education in Morocco

Abstract

Media and technological advancements, and mapping software contributes to the enhancement of pedagogical practices through geography lessons. This can be with various forms of teaching, mainly interactive maps. With scientific advancement and artificial intelligence, the implementation of interactive maps, in addition to investing in modern technology and informatic, has been evolved to enhance learning in geography courses, leading to the development of various theories and teaching practices.

The main central question out of this study to be raised here is: ‘What kind of role do interactive maps play in making the geography lesson fruitful? To simplify this problematic question, I have branched it into several questions, including: What is the current status of teaching and employing maps in secondary geography education? What are the characteristics and benefits of interactive maps? How do interactive maps help in enhancing geography lessons? What are the steps and didactic techniques for their employment? Lastly, what are the most important theoretical and practical approaches to utilizing interactive maps in secondary geography education?

As a starting point, there is a major hypothesis that says “Interactive computer-supported maps play a part in quality enhancement of geography courses”. To simplify the central hypothesis, I broke it down into sub-hypotheses suggesting that: there is a consequential relationship between interactive maps and the enhancement of geography lessons. And special features of interactive map are responsible for the learners’ skills and abilities development. Finally, there is a significant relation between the use of interactive map and that of learners’ geographical competencies to have been met in schools.
