The image of Morocco and Andalusia in the works of Sergio Mathias

Abstract

 This study aims to stand on the experience of one of the most prominent Chilean poets, Sergio Mathias, as a poet who is known to be an expert of the Moroccan and the Arab countries, due to his residency in certain eras of this country. This fact led to the emergence of Poems inhabited by the language of nostalgia and the love for the past. Mathias composed poems that talks about the city of Tetouan and its gardens, the generosity of its people, many other cultural images raising a since of beauty in the soul of its reader. His book, “The Arab Presence in Latin American Literature”, is a descriptive bibliography for most Latin American writers, as it mentions many aspects of the Moroccan and the Arab culture in their works. A rich experience, we thought it deserved a thorough study to get to know the hidden aspects of the Arab and Moroccan cultures, the city of Tetouan in particular, with Chilean's Latin American eyes, which made it an aspiration to this article, thus we divided this article into a general introduction, in which we tackled a brief part of the cultural commons between Morocco and Latin America, and a brief biography of Sergio Mathias, including his most prominent works, we found some of the images he transmitted about Moroccans and Morocco through many examples inspired from his poems, then concluding by a general summary of the study.
