Monitoring earth cover changes in Thi-Qar Governorate for the period 1990 – 2021

Abstract

The study aimed at monitoring the aspects of desertification in Thi-Qar Governorate for the period (2021-1990), as well as revealing the severity of this problem. The importance of the phenomenon of desertification in the marshes of the study area is that it is a serious environmental problem, and many natural and human factors are involved in the emergence of the problem of desertification in the marshes. The study depended on both the descriptive approach by describing the natural phenomena, and the analytical approach by analyzing data and statistical and climatic results. The study revealed that the rates of change in the areas of earth cover had clear changes, such as the change in the area of ​​marshes and swamps, which was negative, reaching (-25.1%) during the study period, and that discovery came through the classification and analysis of earth cover change and the results of applying the equation of comparative change in the study area for the period (1990-2021). The study also recommended to pay attention to the marshlands, as they are considered one of the tourist and recreational areas that have many charm views, natural capabilities and advantages that make them an economic and tourist source, as well as they are considered a world heritage as they were included in the World Heritage List.
