Islam from a Western Perspective: John Esposito as a Model

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the academic contributions of Dr. John L. Esposito in the field of Western Islamic studies, focusing on his efforts to present a balanced and objective image of Islam and Muslims within the Western context, especially after the events of September 11. The research highlights Esposito’s prominent intellectual standing in the academic sphere through his works addressing complex issues such as the relationship between religion and politics, the diversity of Islamic movements, the reality of Islamophobia, and interfaith dialogue. His academic trajectory enabled him to transcend traditional Orientalist narratives through scholarly approaches that seek to challenge stereotypes and build a deeper understanding of the modern Islamic experience.
