Abstract

Abstract:

This study aims to highlight the status of the Arabic language in Moroccan school education, amidst the linguistic and cultural diversity present in Morocco. Despite Arabic being the official language of instruction in schools, it faces several challenges related to the use of other languages in teaching. Morocco adopted a policy of Arabization in education after gaining independence, which led to the initial adoption of Arabic for teaching all school subjects. However, recent reforms in education have reintroduced French into teaching, especially in scientific specializations. This has exacerbated the challenges facing the Arabic language at a time when the world is witnessing cultural integration and fusion. The cultural and linguistic diversity may impact Moroccan identity and civilizational characteristics. This situation calls for educational policies that prioritize the importance of the mother tongue in preserving the cultural and civilizational specificities that distinguish Morocco. These should be entrenched in society by giving sufficient attention to Arabic language instruction at all levels of education.
