Historical research through imagology and travel writings: towards diversifying approaches and renewing readings

Abstract
Travel texts are among the sources that the historical researcher can base his research on, given what links the material they store to historical topics and issues. However, on the other hand, they remain carriers of the traveler’s images and representations of others. These are images that may reflect a certain reality, or may be interspersed with some elements subjectivity and ideology.
From this standpoint, the importance of our study becomes clear. As a study that aims at the importance of employing imagology to research the history of the relationship between the ego and the other, and the nature of this relationship, as well as revealing the drivers and motives that may control the formation of the image of the ego in foreign travel discourse, and in return understanding the importance of imagery in criticizing the self and knowing the truth of the self through the mirror of the other.
To achieve these goals, the study employed an analytical and criticacl approach, through which we highlight the relationship that can combine historical research with the imagology, by adopting the travel text as a source of historical knowledge, and by dismantling the image of the ego in the travel discourse.
The study came to a set of results and conclusions, the most important of which is the necessity of employing formal criticism to find out what is implied in the traveler’s discourse towards others, and on the other hand, working to exploit what was stated in the traveler’s writings to extract historical data that we may not find in other historical sources, direct or not. Therefore, any researcher in history, especially what is related to social history and the history of mentalities, must place among his bibliographic priorities the search for travelogue texts and the acquisition of the important and valuable historical knowledge material they contain
