Abstract

This study examined the cartographic analysis of the geomorphological characteristics of the Badoush–Baghal Basin in northern Iraq using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The study employed morphometric and hydrological analyses of the basin using Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques. The results revealed clear variations in geomorphological patterns, indicating that 37% of the basin’s area falls within the high geomorphological vulnerability category, with erosion rates ranging from 2.8 to 3.5 tons/ha/year in the northern and northeastern areas. The study also revealed a strong correlation (r = 0.78) between geomorphological characteristics and the drainage pattern, confirming the influence of basin shape on surface runoff behavior. Furthermore, the results showed that human activities, particularly agricultural activities, altered surface runoff patterns and increased erosion rates by 22% compared with areas unaffected by human activity. The study recommends implementing integrated geomorphological monitoring methodologies, establishing an integrated monitoring network, implementing water-harvesting projects, applying soil conservation techniques in areas with steep slopes, and developing land-use plans that take geomorphological characteristics into account and protect environmentally vulnerable areas.
